The National Parks have objectives dictated by Law 394/91 "Framework Law on Protected Areas" and refer to the Ministry of the Environment and Protection of the Territory-General Directorate for the Protection of Nature.
22 national parks are currently established in Italy and 2 are awaiting implementation measures. Altogether they cover over a million and a half hectares, equal to about 5% of the national territory. In addition to planning and supervision, the national park must exalt its mission as an instrument for connecting and enhancing local realities, which must find the element of cohesion in the beauty of the territory where they live, the key resource for their development.
